Early Careers
at Canonical

At Canonical, we believe that talent is universally distributed, but opportunity is not. Our early careers program is driven by the desire to create a globally accessible, structured, and scalable pathway that nurtures potential, fosters continuous development, and aligns with our remote-first, open source culture. We call this the "Journey to Prof I."

It includes a defined three-tiered progression model (Graduate → Associate → Prof I), embedded feedback and promotion cycles, ownership, and impact from day one.

This initiative ensures that our early-career hires are not only set up for long-term career success, but also empowered to thrive. It is a core part of Canonical's commitment to inclusive, future-focused talent development.

Hear from team members on the Journey to Prof I

"I particularly appreciate the structured nature of the program, how it sets milestones for my professional development and how it establishes a clear criteria according to which I could evaluate my progress.

The program has worked for me as a roadmap, providing me with an overview of what skills and behaviors can be expected from a professional at each step of their career.

It has helped me identify my own strengths and weaknesses, allowing me to focus on improving the necessary skills at each step."

Octavio

Associate Software Security Engineer

"What I like most about the program is that it allows career advancement from day 1. Knowing that there's plenty of room for growth satisfies my desire to continuously learn, improve, and advance in my career. It also makes me more focused and intentional in what I do. I'd say both technical and behavioral skills have been improved a lot during the journey."

Trinh

Graduate Talent Experience Generalist

"Thanks to the program, I've learned to pick up new skills quickly - to me one month at Canonical feels like six months of development. In addition to gaining hard skills, I've developed the habit of regularly seeking feedback, reflecting on my progress, and giving visibility into my work. Furthermore, working remotely has taught me how to communicate effectively across teams, time zones, and diverse backgrounds."
